Menopause & Your Mental Health

In case no one’s told you:
Your mental health is very likely to be affected during perimenopause and menopause.

This is something every woman deserves to know — early — so we can be prepared, make informed decisions, and avoid the shock of suddenly feeling like a stranger to ourselves.
Because for many, it does hit out of nowhere:
Brain fog. Indecisiveness. Anxiety. Panic. Memory lapses. Depression. Rage.
And the question we ask in the quiet moments: What is happening to me?

For 20–30% of women — especially those with a history of anxiety, depression, or hormonal sensitivity — the impact is not just frustrating. It’s life-altering.

Here’s what we must face together:
🧠 Women aged 45–49 have the highest suicide rate of any female age group in Australia.
That’s not just a number. That’s a national crisis.
⚠️ 1 in 4 women live with a chronic mental health condition — more than heart disease, cancer, or diabetes.
Anxiety (35%) and depression (18%) are the most common — quietly stealing years from our lives.
This is a story that spans a lifetime:
In our 20s to 40s, low mood and anxiety are often mislabelled or dismissed.
In midlife, hormone shifts take over.
Later in life, dementia becomes the leading cause of death in women.
These are all brain-related conditions.
And yes — hormones are part of the story.
Thankfully, pioneers like Professor Jayashri Kulkarni are leading research into how hormonal changes affect women’s mental health. But we need more support, more funding, and far more awareness.

Until then, we need to be proactive. Here’s how to protect yourself:
✅ Ask about Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT/HRT)
✅ Take the MENO-D Assessment, developed by experts
✅ Track your symptoms
✅ Talk to other women — and share your story

And above all, remember:
It’s not just you.
It’s not weakness.
It’s your hormones.
And you’re not alone.
