Renick Bell, live coding + text, May 14, 2020

Описание к видео Renick Bell, live coding + text, May 14, 2020

This performance was streamed on May 15, 2020, as part of the third annual Festival of Communications, Media and Design Telling Stories-2020 in Moscow, organized by the Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design of the Higher School of Economics National Research University.

In it, I improvise generative music for 60 minutes while simultaneously presenting text messages to explain my system and practice and how the openness of live coding is a response to our increasingly algorithmically-mediated society. I talk through text messages and manipulated audio about interaction with agents through a symbolic text interface. The text appears as part of the interface to my musical performance. I relinquish direct control to the agents in my system so that I have more freedom to talk with the audience while performing.

about the festival

On May 15-16, 2020, Moscow will host the third annual Festival of Communications, Media and Design Telling Stories-2020. This is noncommercial project for youth. Telling Stories is dedicated to ideas, innovations, modern technologies, the latest achievements in the world of creative industries and media. It brings together leaders of creative industries, entrepreneurs, representatives of new media, marketing and PR, the design and fashion communities, the entertainment industry and all those who are interested in the present and future of communications, media and design.

Like many events now, the festival will be held ONLINE, and we plan to attract 1,000,000 participants to its events, most of which are now from 17 to 30 years old.

The main theme of the Festival in 2020 is New Norm / New Reality.

The world has changed. 2020 made this an absolute fact: we all quickly and unexpectedly found ourselves in a new reality. Of course, we can say that the signs of this were noticeable before: globalization, the general state of anxiety and the transition of life to the “digital” mode have become the overarching issues of contemporary art, design, cinema, media, fashion - areas that are designed to capture the zeitgeist of our times. But the world has not changed as promised in discussions, films and forecasts.

We constantly hear (and talk): we have to be ready for a change, be flexible and at the same time prepared for crises. This is now not just a wish, but a vital necessity. The habits, patterns, and norms of a new state that are taking shape before our eyes are a fertile topic of research. Media, cinema, communications, contemporary art, design, fashion are the strategic themes of the Telling Stories festival, and through them we want to see what contours the new reality takes. What is becoming a norm and a habit now? How do opinion leaders influence this, from analysts to influencers? Is it possible to feel in information security - or has big data already known everything about us?? Where is digital art going? How are theaters, museums and fashion shows changing? How does a movie simulate our inner fears? And finally, in what way to tell stories now? About this and much more we will talk at the Telling Stories-2020 festival.

The ideologist and organizer of the Festival, one of the largest training centers for creative industries in Russia and Europe, is the Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design of the Higher School of Economics National Research University.
