Situated alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal are the Oswaldtwistle coke ovens, or locally known as the 'Fairy Caves'.

The Oswaldtwistle ovens, known locally as the “fairy caves”, once converted the coal from the adjacent Aspen Colliery into coke for the steelworks as a smokeless fuel, but have not glowed red since 1930.

However, a mining tragedy occurred back in 1909 directly underneath the area that resulted in the death of a young boy called James Redman and a further 24 other miners being trapped for a long, insufferable three hours before finally being rescued.

This is their story.
