The history of skateboarding in Florida, the East Coast and the world! We discuss skating in the 60’s, 70’s on through present day. We started on clay wheels and loose ball bearings on trucks held on with three screws and just one bushing. Skateboarders have a unique universal bond. You skate on your own, with your own style and interpretation. Eventually you get to share your abilities with only a few people who know how hard it is to do. And you compete with each other while cheering for them. Mutual admiration society. Alan Gelfand, Mike McGill, Rodney Mullen, Professor Paul Schmitt, Monty Nolder and many more Florida Skaters, Florida OG Skateboarders, groms, locals, Kona, the Bro Bowl, Sensation Basin, Rainbow Wave, Clearwater SkatePark, Cadillac Wheels, Solid Surf, MR Grind for Life, Boards for Bros,
Florida and Eastern USA Skateboarders thrived in relatively obscurity. We hope to uncover those and celebrate the bond all skaters share.

Florida skateboard contests, summer of ’77. Summer of ’78, summer of ’79, summer of ’80 Skateboard contest scene in Florida, Rapid progression of skateboarding skill and trick invention, rock-n-roll, invert, McTwist. Florida vs. California skateboarding and surfing. Rodney Mullen, Alan Gelfand and Kelly Slater. Rodney is out of this world and here we have video and photos of him before he moved to California. Alan Gelfand invented the Ollie - the worlds most influential trick and Kelly Slater is well into double digits own World Surfing Championship victories. All three of them came from Florida!

Music scene started with Rock and at the time the 'other music' was Disco - disco Sucks! Then one day God created The Cars and that led to the Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedy's. Any driving music that you could feel when you came up to the lip energized you to keep going higher and higher. We got Skateboarder Magazine once a month and just consumed it. As we progressed found that the magazine was 'getting the shot' but no one was making the moves. And with our lack of parks and pools that would pop due to high ground water line, we had to WORK for a place to skate. We wanted it badly.

If we saw an official No Skateboarding sign, we laughed or just took it. Now they are everywhere. Guess we were doing a good job of illustrating what we did was unstoppable even though the damn insurance companies and attorneys tried to stop it. There is a fine line. If we tell children that they are non-traditional and not participating in a 'real' sport. We are telling them they are bad. Then there is no surprise when they fulfill the prophecy. I'm bad? Ok, I'll skate handrails and steps and ledges that say NO SKATEBOARDING on them. I'm supposed to, you said so!

And now Skateboarding is an Olympic Sport. It is good. Do not take me wrong. But the only 100% way to judge a contest is a timed downhill or slalom run. Judging how 'good' someone is, is arbitrary. We are humans and humans cannot help but be fallible. And so the judging includes popularity, ethnicity, locals etc that shade judges scoring. And if each country that hosts the Olympics lets their coUntry competitors skate it before the rest of the world then that becomes an advantage.

Skateboarding changed my life - I hope you can relate! Florida skating in the humidity. We want it more. Got less coverage. Got flow not cash. And we would do it again because it is fun as all get out! Carpe diem!!! Go skate!
