After a whirlwind one-day Luxor tour of no fewer than four major ancient tombs and temples along both the east and west bank, we were ready for a bit of rest and relaxation -- no better way to chill out than by continuing our journey on yet another boat. Rather than a yacht in the Red Sea, however, our next home away from home was a small sailboat called the El Nil, part of the fleet of tour company Nour El Nil.

After a short 30-minute drive south from Luxor, we spent the morning with our new Nour El Nil tour guide Ahmed wandering around Esna Temple, before boarding our new floating home. We settled in, met our new crew and shipmates, and spent the first evening simply enjoying the views of both banks of the river as we slowly sailed upriver until finding a spot to tie up for the night. We left the ship at dawn the next morning for a walk around the seemingly endless sugarcane fields lining the river's banks, dodging camels and donkeys on the well-worn paths as we tried to avoid interrupting the rhythms of the way of life that the Nile has supported along its banks for millennia. Just the first day of a long, slow week getting a glimpse of life along this giant of a river.
