The Kochi Water Metro is India's first integrated water transport system, serving the Greater Kochi region in Kerala. It connects 10 island communities to the mainland through a network of battery-operated electric hybrid boats, aiming to enhance urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion.

Key Features:

Routes and Terminals: The system plans to operate 16 routes with 38 terminals over 76 kilometers. As of now, nine terminals are operational, including High Court, Vyttila, Vypin, Kakkanad, Bolgatty, Fort Kochi, South Chittoor, Cheranelloor, and Eloor.

Fleet: The Water Metro utilizes 23 battery-operated electric hybrid boats, designed for quick charging and eco-friendly operation.

Integration with Kochi Metro: The system is integrated with the Kochi Metro, providing seamless connectivity and serving as a feeder service to suburban areas along the waterways.

Ridership: Upon full operation, the Water Metro is expected to handle up to 150,000 passengers daily.


Recent Developments:

In March 2024, two new routes were inaugurated:

High Court to South Chittoor: This route passes through Bolgatty and Mulavukad North.

South Chittoor to Cheranelloor: This route extends through Eloor.


Awards and Recognition:

The Kochi Water Metro has received international attention for its sustainable urban water transport initiatives. In October 2023, it won awards for excellence in ferry services at the Global Maritime India Summit held in Mumbai.
