The Pattern 1851 Minié rifle was the first rifle ever to be issued to the majority of an army. Almost overnight, the effective range of infantry firepower increased from about 100 yards to 500 yards and beyond. At the battle of Inkerman on November 5, 1854, British troops with the P/51 repulsed a vastly numerically superior Russian assault, earning the P/51 the nickname “the Destroying Angel.”
