The Body Shop was once one of Britain's largest cosmetics companies. Growing to enormous success during the 1970s and 1980s through a franchising strategy that allowed them to expand quickly and with little risk. As such, Anita Roddick became one of the best known businesspeople in England and was heralded for her activism, something often used by The Body Shop in marketing. However, after going public in 1986, the business changed focused and became far more profit driven, eventually cutting their activist roots to two campaigns a year. This made their activism seem less genuine and more corporate, eventually losing them their audience. Since then, neither L'Oreal, nor Natura were able to bring back it's relevancy despite being in extremely political times and so now, after a final sale to Aurelius, the company is being split into parts during liquidation to absolve debts.
