About Kent Freshwater
My name is Kent Freshwater, and I grew up fishing. With a name like Freshwater, you have to believe that it's meant for me to become a Kayak Fishing Guide!
I just turned 22, of course, you might be saying, "Why aren't you going to college and trying to get a traditional job?" The truth is, I have Central Auditory Processing Disorder, so it's really hard for me to "process" information, to sit in a classroom, to work on a computer, or to do traditional structured work. But, get me out on the water and in tune with the environment and it works for me. I have trouble talking to people about most things, but talking about fishing and telling TRUE fishing stories is easy. That's why I am asking YOU to be my Kayak Fishing Guide launch partner.
You know how they say it takes about 10,000 hours to become an expert? Well, I am sure I have 10,000 hours and then some...I am an expert at CATCHING fish. It all started when I was about four-years-old and my mom bought me a little fishing pole. You know the ones, the Spiderman pole with the fake red plastic fish on the end. I started fishing in the backyard pond and like they say, "I was hooked!" Over time, I asked for a cast net and I started learning how to throw the net and pull in the fish and bait from the pond. I pulled out a lot of Gar and Bass back then.
By the time I was eight, my mom dropped me off at the local fishing pier with a fishing pole and some shrimp for bait. That was when my fishing education began. I was lucky that the old timers on the fishing pier looked out for me and taught me how to find bait, set up my pole and most of all, how to "think like a fish!"
What do I mean when I say "think like a fish?" Well, it means I think about where the fish would be the hanging out to ambush dinner. Once I did that, I started catching fish left and right. I can catch Snapper, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Trout, Grouper, Snook, Redfish and even Tarpon. I also catch Bass in freshwater, but my business is about Kayak Fishing in saltwater in Boca Grande, Lemon Bay, Magnetos Key and the Cape Haze area of Southwest Florida. (This is the area south of Sarasota and north of Fort Myers near the mouth of Charlotte Harbor on the West Coast of Florida.)
Why Kayak Fishing?
Why do I love kayak fishing? When I was 15, I got an Ocean Prowler 13 kayak for my birthday. It was about $1000 to get it all set up, but my mother says it was "the best $1000 she ever spent" because I still use that kayak daily and I fish every day. I have caught monster Grouper in shallow water in my trusty kayak. (None of this spending big bucks to go out on a smelly diesel group charter boat without any guarantee of even catching a fish for me!) I have caught my legal limits of Trout, Snook, Redfish, Sheepshead, Drum...you name it, I can figure out how to catch it!
Now it's time to start earning a living with my passion for fishing! That is why I decided that becoming a Kayak Fishing Guide is the ideal way to serve and educate others about why we need to preserve our environment for the future while also living my passion for fishing.
