"The opening of this terminal is an historic moment for the Czech Republic. It takes us a long way toward energy independence from Russia. It will cover about a third of our annual consumption for the next five years. The search does not end there. Of course, we are talking to other companies and exporters. We are searching for other possible terminals, particularly in Germany and Poland. The Czech government is taking measures to minimize the impact of the war on our household and businesses. And the European Union is also looking for a Europe wide solution."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy, The Netherlands:
"Now, in times of this war in Ukraine, it's time to accelerate the energy transition. And the best way to ensure energy independency for the Europeans is to use our energy more efficiently, to become more self-sufficient in clean energy and to diversify our energy inputs. In the short term, LNG is one of the main tools we have to achieve these goals, and this new terminal represents a major contribution to efforts by all EU countries. It means we can increase capacity by 8 billion cubic meters before the coming winter."

STORYLINE:
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Dutch Minister of Climate and Energy Rob Jetten opened the floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Dutch port Eemshaven on Thursday.
The gas tanker the Golar Igloo was for the first time connected to the floating gas terminal EemsEnergy and started with production from LNG, delivered by tanker, into gaseous form.
As winter nears, European nations, desperate to replace the natural gas they once bought from Russia, have embraced a short-term fix. A series of roughly 20 floating terminals that would receive LNG from other countries and convert it into heating fuel.
Yet the plan, with the first floating terminals set to deliver natural gas by year's end, has raised alarms among scientists who fear the long-term consequences for the environment.
They warn that these terminals would perpetuate Europe's reliance on natural gas, which releases climate-warming methane and carbon dioxide when it's produced, transported and burned.
Much of the LNG that Europe hopes to receive is expected to come from the United States.
