According to a story mentioned in Harvansh Purana, once demon guru Shukra went to Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash and asked him the solution to keep the demons safe from the gods. Shiva told Shukra that penance is the only means by which you can free yourself from demons. Can keep it safe from the gods. On the orders of Lord Shiva, Shukra went to perform penance and did severe penance for many years.

When Shukra was engrossed in penance, there was a fierce war between the gods and the demons and in this war, Lord Vishnu beat Shukra's mother. When Shukra's penance was completed, he received the initiation of the Sanjeevani as a boon, with the influence of this power he could bring the person back to life.

When he returned to his ashram after penance, he became angry when he saw that his mother was lying. Through the influence of Tapo Bal, he came to know that the cause of his mother's was beat by Lord Vishnu. In anger, he cursed Lord Vishnu and said that O Vishnu, you will have to take birth on earth seven times and die.

After this, he revived all the demons including his mother with the help of the Sanjeevani Mantra and started preparing to attack heaven. The curse given by Venus proved to be a boon for Lord Vishnu and a curse for the demons, because Lord Vishnu took birth in human form on earth seven times and beat the demons.
