The seventh part of our nine-part series covers one common problem with large business applications, where the wheel is re-invented by the dev team of each new application. This concerns slow reports.

A slow report is a report which takes so much time to generate that a typical web service call cannot wait that long, holding the connection open. Most browsers or intermediate components in the HTTP path will time out. Therefore, we have a problem -- how does the developer design the code to generate a report which must be delivered to the user through her browser, but which takes too long to generate? Answer: run an async operation on the server to generate the report, and send the data back when it's done.

This entire framework has been designed by our team for various applications over the last two decades, but we recently decided to build it into our web service development framework, Remiges Alya.
