The Cuban sugar mill of Ifrain Alfonso hadstwo distinguishing features. Firstly, it's home to the two largest locomotives in Cuba, the Alco 2-8-2s, 1910 & 1911. Number 1910 (Dona Flor) is seen in this sequence.Secondly, the line features a bizarre flat crossing of the island's only motorway. What makes this crossing even more bizarre is the fact that a bridge was built for the railway by the Russian contractors who built the motorway, but that the Cubans had never actually put the railway over it! In this sequence, we can see Alco 2-8-0 number 1637 crossing the motorway alongside the completed bridge intended for the line. Happily, both these locomotives still exist. Filmed in June 1998.
