Shark attacks. They happen. Experts say with more people in the water worldwide, they'll be happening more often.

"I can make a prediction that each decade will have more shark attacks than the previous decade as long as human growth continues," said George Burgess of the Florida Program For Shark Research. He added that there's no real way to tell year-to-year how frequent attacks will be in any given place.

Marie Levine from Shark Research Institute agrees that more are people in the water. But hold your hysteria, she said: Shark numbers overall are dwindling. "Sharks really do not present a threat. People present a threat to sharks," Levine said from her Princeton home. She added that some 73 million sharks are killed each year, and some species verge on extinction. "Some of them are," she said. "Some are down by 99 percent."

Shark Research Institute is the comprehensive database for shark attacks in the US. They're online at sharkattackfile.net. It claims to include every known shark-human mixup, including provoked attacks (bringing a live shark aboard a fishing boat) and even ones involving war between nations. Our fascination with sharks is boundless.

"They're large wild animals, and we're in a different environment when we're with the shark," says Levine, who was rescuing frog eggs from her swimming pool. "Just as people are afraid of lions and grizzlies, you just have to remember that they're wild animals. They're not cuddly."

Nowadays you can track sharks through websites like Ocearch, where Great Whites have names and even Twitter accounts, like Mary Lee, a frequent Shore visitor.

You're still more likely to hit the lottery than get attacked by a shark, say experts. But if you're a beachgoer, know this.

"For most people entering the sea, they think it's the equivilent of going into a backyard pool or the YMCA pool," Burgess said. "But it's not. It's a wilderness we're associating with, and with any wilderness activity, there are risks associated with that activity."

Millions of people were in the water worldwide all day Tuesday. One of them, a surfer, lost his leg to a shark in Australia yesterday and is now hanging onto his life.
