As families gather for the holiday season, I wanted to share some historical knowledge and perspective on markets, risk, and economic cycles. I see a wide array of Youtube channels sponsored by Crypto platforms or Stock Market Investment apps, and believe now is the time to avoid investment and reflect on pulling out of positions as we can learn the lessons of history by looking at how markets behave near the later stages of long cycles.

In the late 1920s, investing was no longer limited to elites in major cities. By 1928–1929, participation in the stock market had expanded dramatically to include 1/3 of Americans — including farmers, shopkeepers, and people living far from financial centers.

This expansion didn’t happen by accident.

It was made possible through a set of mechanisms that made investing feel accessible, familiar, and culturally expected:

Local banks acted as intermediaries, placing trades on behalf of customers through correspondent banks in cities. For many people, investing didn’t feel speculative — it felt like something handled by trusted local institutions.

Brokerage accounts could be opened by mail, with instructions sent in writing and confirmations arriving days later. Physical distance from financial centers was no longer a barrier.

Price information traveled through telegraph and ticker systems to banks and broker offices, while newspapers printed daily stock tables and success stories that normalized participation.

Easy credit and margin lending allowed people to buy stocks with very little upfront capital, dramatically increasing participation while also increasing fragility when prices stopped rising.

At the same time, mass media promoted the idea that markets had entered a permanent new era — that productivity and modern finance had eliminated the risks of previous cycles.

By the end of the decade, roughly one-third of American households had some exposure to the stock market, directly or indirectly. Historically, when participation reaches this level, it often signals a late-stage cycle rather than an early one.

The number of channels I see where investment in the stock market is portrayed as a guaranteed way to secure one's future is staggering. The fear of missing out and belief that the markets, which are already at an historical high, will conitnue rising, is a repeat of the period leading to the Crash of 1929.

Stocking up a pantry, or investing in Silver, are a valable alternative to keeping investments in the Stock Market or in Crypto currencies.
