Dik Knight first came to Papua New Guinea in 1970 as a young Australian army officer and fell in love with the country. In 1974, he returned to PNG as a teacher at Goroka High School. By 1976, he was a pioneer teacher at the newly established Aiyura National High School in the Eastern Highlands.

Following his teaching career, Dik founded the Loloata Island Dive Resort off Port Moresby and became a leading promoter of tourism in PNG until 2016, when he sold the resort.

In this interview, Dik Knight, now 77, shares his deep love for PNG and his concerns over the last 50 years, particularly regarding declining education standards and an underdeveloped tourism industry that should be an economic powerhouse for the nation.

As PNG approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, Dik reflects on the nation's journey and his hopes for its future.
