When we think of the pros and cons of video games and our child’s development, we frequently compare it to another activity: reading. It is tempting as parents to think that reading is a superior activity to video gaming. We think it will help with school, build vocabulary and language skills, and add to our child’s knowledge on many subjects. But is reading a superior activity to gaming? In this video we explore some of the many similarities that both reading and gaming have in common. We also discuss specific areas in which gaming offers enrichment beyond what we typically find in reading. And we examine how reading has advantages over gaming.
