Описание к видео DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES EXPLAINED | The science behind nightmares and dreams

In this video, we explain the science behind dreams and nightmares based around different theories by psychologists and other experts.
Dreams are simply stories, images that our minds create from imagination of from past events.
Nightmares are simply dreams that cause unpleasant and frightening emotional responses in our brains.
According to Sigmund Freud, a famous psychologist, dreams are a window into our subconscious and they reveal your unconscious desires, motivations and desires.
Dreams happen by default in the part of the brain that remains active during quiet periods.
Dreams and nightmares can be lucid where you are aware that you are dreaming and this happened during the period before you completely fall asleep.
This stage is also known as the rapid eye movement (REM). During This stage, the brain neurons are as active as when you are completely awake.
Most vivid dreams happen during this stage and that’s why you are sometimes able to remember your dreams.
According to studies, some people are able to change the story line of their dreams or even continue their dreams after short periods of being awake.
According to dream experts, your dreams may be your body’s way of confronting emotional dramas in your life that your conscious mind wouldn’t act on.
Our brains function at a higher emotional level when we are sleeping than when we are awake and this enables it to make emotional connections between your real life activities and experiences and your subconscious.

Some people may also experience dreams where they are fighting or defending themselves from a known or unknown person.
This happens when you are sleep deprived triggering response from the amygdale, the emotional rapid response center of the brain.
The amygdale is responsible for the fight or flight response that enables us to act quick in reaction to a threat posed on us.
Sometimes when you are sleep deprived, the amygdale may go into full gear and you may experience minor movements as if you are defending yourself of screaming.
Fortunately, your brain sends out nerve signals to relax you.
This is also more likely to happen during REM sleep.
Nightmares are bad dreams that are often caused by;
Stress, fear, trauma, emotional distress, illnesses such as PTSD, anxiety and depression, sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea.
Medication such as blood pressure medication, steroids such as prednisone, anti depressants, antihistamines, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease medications, have also been seen to cause nightmares.
According to the American academy of sleep medicine, children between the age of five and ten years of age are more prone to experience nightmares and even remember at least one nightmare they had later in life.
However, very little is known in regard to why this happens to children more than adults.

If you experience the same nightmare over and over to the extent that you cannot sleep or it’s affecting your quality of life, you are advised to talk to a mental health expert for solutions.
