Ice bath: the easiest way to test the accuracy of your thermometer!

I was recently at @thermoworks HQ for an event and learned this simple method that ensures you’re getting the right readings on any thermometer. Here are the steps:

1. FILL WITH ICE. Fill your container with ice all the way to the top (or be a rebel like me and fill 3/4 of the way). Crushed ice is preferred.

2. ADD WATER. Fill with cold water halfway. If you poured too much, then drain some water out.

3. INSERT PROBE. Let the ice and water rest for a minute or two, then insert probe and stir. Do this to keep the probe from resting on an ice cube, which will affect the reading.

4. CALIBRATE. If your thermometer reads 32°F (0°C), then it’s as accurate as can be! If the reading is off, adjust your thermometer as directed by the manufacturer.

Note that manufacturers usually have different accuracy specifications. Check the documentation on the thermometer for this info.
