It has been more than two months since the Feb. 1 coup in Myanmar and the situation inside the country has continued to deteriorate amid daily killings, detentions and torture of unarmed civilians. The junta is holding onto power despite nationwide opposition from the Myanmar public, deploying security forces in both urban and rural areas in a campaign that has so far resulted in more than 550 people being killed by the security forces and thousands arrested.

In recent weeks the military has extended its campaign to the countryside, focusing on areas controlled by ethnic armed groups, particularly those where many urban people have sought shelter in efforts to flee the violence and persecution.
Among groups being targeted are journalists, government workers and civil society groups. The suspension of broadband wi-fi services has added further difficulties for media who are risking their lives to cover the news. All the while, basic government services, banking and transport networks are steadily breaking down amid the ongoing civil disobedience campaign,
