SONGUN IN A NUTSHELL

Hello, comrades. Today, I’m going to be doing another video on the DPRK because I haven’t done a video of this kind for a while now. North Korea is also a particular country that is just shrouded in imperialist slanders, lies and right-wing anti-communist propaganda, to the point where it becomes so pressing on your mentality that you actually start to feel guilty for even thinking to question it. So, I’ve decided to upload this video today to talk a little bit about the DPRK.

In particular, for this video, which will probably be shorter than usual. I want to talk about Songun. Now, what is Songun? Well, Songun is essentially the military first policy that is seen in the DPRK. However, this in itself is extremely shrouded in imperialist slanders that many people have actually become so misinformed as to what the purpose of this military first policy really is.

In order to give an explanation as to what Songun actually is, I just want to shed some light on the imperialist slanders that you would more than likely hear about North Korea when it comes to the country’s military first policy. The first and foremost slander that you are more likely to come across from right-wingers and neo-liberals, is that the Songun policy is essentially a military first policy at the expense of the people of the DPRK. By this, they basically mean that the military has all the best kit, the most food and the best accommodation, while the rest of the population is impoverished.

But this is not really the case at all.

The purpose of the military in North Korea is to serve the people and defend the Socialist system of the DPRK. This is why it is actually very common to see soldiers from the Korean People’s Army actually building roads, schools, houses, hospitals and even helping out on collective farms while also engaging in other social-oriented services which directly benefit the people and the country in the face of being beaten down by sanctions, embargoes and the threat of US military literally just across the border.

Think about that for a moment. While you sit there in sheer terror as you watch the news when you’re having your dinner, as you hear about the DPRK strengthening its military or conducting a missile test - just think about how scary it must be for North Korea to know that just across the border, the US and South Korean militaries engage in joint exercises which simulate an attack on their country.

Let me also just emphasise on the fact that the DPRK is a victim of imperialism, so I’d say that in these current conditions, they’re definitely doing the right thing here because rather than having a policy where the military is the main priority at the expense of the people, North Korea’s military first policy is basically to provide the military with enough resources and avenues to be able to serve the people and defend Socialism. Songun is basically a state mechanism that was made with the National Defence Assembly in September of 1998 at the first session of the 10th Supreme People’s Assembly when it was eventually systemised in one of the hardest times that the DPRK has ever faced.
