That would indicate an ocean located around 100 meters below the surface of the ice. However, how can we verify whether the ocean is indeed there? Planets revolve. They often get somewhat broader in the center as they spin, resembling a squashed ball. Pluto should have a hump near the equator if it had rotated quickly in the past.

The ice may shift and the hump may gradually disappear if there is an ocean beneath it. However, if Pluto is completely frozen, the hump will remain. Thus, researchers searched for that lump. They made use of the New Horizons images. These images were really detailed. On the surface, they displayed objects as little as 200 feet wide. The researchers searched for any indications of a shift in form. However, the most significant hints were not bumps. They were fissures. Pluto's surface had large gashes and fissures that New Horizons saw. These weren't caused by space objects striking Pluto. They originated from Pluto's interior pushing out. The globe appeared to be expanding. The size of Pluto's ocean would increase if it began to freeze.
