What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is the process by which humans take in food and use it for energy, growth, repair, and maintenance of the body.
Type of Nutrition in Humans
Humans show Holozoic Nutrition.
Holozoic Nutrition involves five main steps:
Ingestion
Taking food into the body through the mouth.
Digestion
Breaking complex food into simpler, soluble substances with the help of enzymes.
Absorption
Digested food is absorbed into the blood through the small intestine.
Assimilation
Absorbed nutrients are used by body cells for energy, growth, and repair.
Egestion
Removal of undigested food through the anus.
Digestive Organs and Their Functions
Mouth: Chewing and saliva secretion (amylase)
Stomach: Digests proteins using pepsin and HCl
Small Intestine: Complete digestion and absorption
Large Intestine: Absorbs water
