The rolling hills of western New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania create a beautiful landscape with farms and small towns dotted all over. Both the Black River & Western and New Hope & Ivyland Railroads have called this area home for more than half a century! In 2022, both railroads continued time-tested traditions of Fall themed excursions with the Pumpkin Express on the BR&W and a variety of excursions on the NH&I. In this video, we'll go trackside to catch these iconic steam locomotives in the beautiful countryside of New Jersey and Pennsylvania!

History of BR&W 60:
Black River & Western 60 was built for the Great Western Railroad by the American Locomotive Company in 1937. #60 hauled beet and molasses trains for most of its career. Unlike most steam locomotives in preservation, #60 was purchased by the BR&W from the Great Western in 1963, only changing hands twice in its life. The locomotive has spent 59 years in preservation, and continues to pull excursions of the BR&W today.

History of NH&I 40:
Originally built for the Lancaster & Chester Railway in South Carolina, 40 was outshopped from the Baldwin Works in Philadelphia in 1925 for a cost of nearly $25,000. It would work for the LC until 1947, when it was retired and sold to the Cliffside Railroad in North Carolina. In 1962, the locomotive was aqcuired by Steam Trains Inc, the precursor to the New Hope & Ivyland. 40 would remain inoperable until 1975 when it was restored to operating condition, and has been running ever since.
