Former prime minister Paul Keating says none of Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong’s comments at the National Press Club added one “iota” of substance to one of Australia's major foreign policy tasks being faced.

“Australia’s major foreign policy task is to soften that rigidity by encouraging both the United States and China to find common cause and benefit in a peaceful and prosperous Pacific,” Mr Keating said.

"Nothing Penny Wong said today, on Australia's behalf, adds one iota of substance to that urgent task."

Earlier in the day, during her National Press Club address, Ms Wong addressed criticism made by Mr Keating during his NPC address in March.
