Police have arrested a Chinese man for trying to set fire to the cabin of a plane as it was landing in China early Sunday morning.

Shenzhen Airlines flight ZH-9648 was en route to Guangzhou from Taizhou city and was carrying 95 passengers and nine crew members at the time of the incident.

According to a passenger, a man in his 40’s set a fire in the first class cabin just as the plane was about to land.

“The flight attendants were making landing preparations, and they saw a fire at one of the doors. Two flight attendants and one passenger put out the fire with extinguishers,” one passenger said to Zhejiang newspaper Dushi Kuaibao.

Another passenger reportedly smelled gasoline from the first-class cabin, according to Sina News.

The man then went to the economy class cabin and pulled out a knife about 20 to 30 centimetres long, threatening other passengers.

Two male passengers tried to intervene and pushed the man back into first class.

The man managed to set newspapers on fire before he was overpowered by the passengers and flight crew.

Guangzhou Air Control received a Mayday call from the aircraft, according to The Beijing News. The man was arrested once the plane landed in Guangzhou.

Two passengers suffered minor injuries during the scuffle while no other people were injured. It is unclear how the man was able to bring a lighter and gasoline onto the plane. Shenzhen Airlines confirmed the security breach, but did not elaborate on the incident, according to The South China Morning Post.
