Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has rejected a federal plan to resettle nearly 6,000 asylum seekers in the province, citing a lack of capacity and focus on attracting skilled professionals like doctors and nurses. He vowed to challenge any attempt by Ottawa to send asylum seekers without the province's consent.

Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller clarified that no such plan exists without compensation or provincial agreement, and numbers mentioned are aspirational. Other provinces, including New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, have also expressed concerns about receiving large numbers of asylum seekers.

Quebec Premier François Legault reiterated his demand to reduce the number of refugees in the province, while talks with Ottawa have made little progress. Nova Scotia’s Immigration Minister Jill Balser took a more collaborative tone, stating that the province could consider accepting asylum seekers if supported with federal resources, while Opposition leader Zach Churchill criticized Houston's stance as inconsistent with his population growth goals.
