Isabella King:
My name is Isabella King and I am 23 years old. I went to Appalachian State University and I graduated in 2022 with a degree in sustainable development. It took a couple of months to find a job after I graduated, and I now work at a company called Frontiers, which does scientific publishing. Frontiers is a global company, so we've got people working all over the world collaborating.

They're open access, which means that one anywhere in the world can read any of our work at any time. And I am fully remote as an editorial development specialist, I would say I am using my degree quite a bit. It taught me a lot about sustainable development and environmentalism, environmental science generally, and that knowledge has come in very useful in my current career.

Isabella King:
Being remote during the pandemic in school didn't exactly prepare me for what a remote career looks like, and I think I have found that self-motivation is a lot more important than I thought it would have to be, especially in a remote job. A difficulty of working remotely is that I don't feel like I get the same connection with some of my coworkers as I would in person.

And I think the thing I like most about working remotely is just the ability to sort of have my own space that's truly my own. I think a few of the emotions I struggled with transitioning between college and working are a fear that I wasn't going to be good enough and that I wasn't going to get it right.

I think the thing that I realized about those fears is you defeat them by accepting them that there are going to be times where you're not good at something.

I would say my social life between university and working life is very different. So it's definitely been a more isolating experience than I think I was ready for. I think that the best way to meet people you're like, is to do things that you like to do.

I've started to play Dungeons and Dragons with a group of mine and my brother's friends. It's a really good time. It's the thing that forces me out of the house every week, you know, no matter what's going on, I can't let the group down. I paint many figures for Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons with my partner, Eli. I also have started leather crafting again, which has been really fun.

One thing I wish I knew in college was just that nobody expects you to have it all figured out. I think that as life evolves, so do you. And it's about thinking, figuring out the thing that makes you happy right now and doing that.
