In 2018 I was chosen to be one of the main stage speakers at the Global Speakers Summit in Auckland New Zealand. I was very excited and of course nervous to deliver a keynote for the first time internationally and in front of my peers.

Anyone who has ever spoken on the mainstage at NSA or any of our speaker association events understand the amount of stress that goes into presenting a keynote in front of your peers!
Being a professional speaker over the last 30 years has taught me a lot of lessons. Specifically I think I've seen just about everything that can go wrong go wrong, from technical malfunctions to acts of nature and just about anything in between.

How to survive a calamity on stage has always been a speaker’s nightmare and overcoming it to win big is the best feeling on the planet! The week before this video was shot, I observed a speaker who was unprepared and just brought a thumb drive of their presentation to the conference. As he started to experience technical difficulties it was obvious, he did not know his material and was completely dependent on PowerPoint.

Whenever I'm giving a keynote program I like to control as much of the environment as possible and have redundant backups, this was not the case with this speaker. He began to complain about this from the stage and completely stopped his performance while talking to the AV people and apologizing. This left an indelible mark on me because I was going to give one of the biggest programs of my life the following week.

As they say Mr. Murphy and his Law showed up for me in Auckland to welcome me to The Big Stage, which would become one of my proudest moments as a professional speaker.
