Wheeled excavators, primarily seen in Europe, are starting to crop up more in North America.

Both types have advantages and disadvantages. Here's a look at the differences that may help you decide which to invest in.

The first thing you should consider is what type of terrain you will. be working on the most.

Tracked excavators are better in squishy, muddy places and for ground that is uneven. They are also better on hills.

Wheeled excavators compensate for uneven ground with stability arms but tracked excavators distribute weight better with a lower center of gravity.

Tracks can take a beating better than rubber. They'll get around on dirt and gravel easier.

But wheeled excavators are dynamic when on the roads or working in urban areas. They move around faster, and they're more versatile. They can be driven to a location while tracked excavators often have to be hauled to a worksite using a trailer.

Wheeled excavators are easier on asphalt, while a tracked excavator can tear stuff up pretty quick.

Both wheeled excavators and tracked ones can perform the same tasks with equal productivity.

Stability is always the biggest question people have about wheeled excavators.

Wheeled excavators use stabilizers, and they work great.

Tracked excavators are best used on sites where protecting the terrain isn’t a concern while wheeled excavators are ideal if you want a machine that's a little nimble and faster. Faster is a relative term here, you won't be drag racing on your break.

Transportation of these machines is the big difference. Wheeled excavators can generally take care of that on their own. Tracked excavators needed to be transported. That takes time and money.

Out of the gate, wheeled excavators will often cost more than a tracked excavator the same size, however, over the long run, the wheeled type will save money on the aforementioned transportations costs, and undercarriage maintenance.

One downside is replacement parts. The less common a machine is, the less likely there will be used or aftermarket parts available.
