The MS Mediterranean Sky, once a proud passenger liner, met a tragic fate in the Elefsina Gulf, Greece. Originally built in 1953 as the City of York, the ship was later renamed and operated by the Karageorgis Lines, ferrying passengers between Patras, Greece, and Brindisi, Italy. By the late 1990s, economic struggles and dwindling demand for sea travel led to the vessel being abandoned in Elefsina, a once-thriving industrial area near Athens. Left to deteriorate, the ship's condition worsened over the years, and in 2002, it began taking on water and listing dangerously. Efforts to salvage the ship were deemed too costly, and on January 26, 2003, the Mediterranean Sky capsized and came to rest on its port side, becoming a haunting relic of maritime decline.

Today, the half-submerged wreck of the Mediterranean Sky serves as a somber landmark in the Elefsina Gulf, attracting both curiosity and sorrow. The corroding hull, jutting out of the water, is a stark reminder of the vessel's former glory and the neglect that led to its downfall.
