Avatar director James Cameron sits down with Brandon Davis in a Director Debrief interview to discuss Avatar: Fire and Ash, using the film’s depiction of war, suffering and resistance to reflect on real-world conflicts including Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.

Cameron explains that while Avatar is an action film, its battles are framed around the moral question of fighting only when survival is at stake, not for revenge or domination.

In the interview, Cameron speaks about growing up during the Vietnam era and later witnessing wars in Afghanistan, saying those conflicts were driven by geopolitical interests rather than justice and were not righteous wars.

He contrasts them with situations where communities are pushed into fighting for survival, referencing Gaza directly as an example of how facing total annihilation is an existential reason to fight back.

Cameron adds that his characters resist violence until there is no alternative, reinforcing the film’s message about righteous resistance versus wars waged for power.
