(30 Sep 2015) Burkina Faso's interim president toured one of the main presidential guard bases late on Wednesday after it fell to the army overnight, following
the failed coup.
Interim President Michel Kafando thanked the troops and hailed the army's success in clearing out the "rebels" without loss of life as a "miraculous feat".
The military general who led the short-lived coup in Burkina Faso has sought refuge at the Vatican embassy, a day after the army opened fire on his supporters in the presidential guard to force them to disarm.
General Gilbert Diendere is sheltering at the Vatican nunciature in Burkina Faso's capital, according to a source close to the Catholic clergy who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
The presidential guard arrested interim President Michel Kafando and interim Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida on September 16.
Diendere later took power, but stepped down after pressure from the West African regional bloc, Burkina Faso's military and demonstrating citizens.
Under a peace deal, the presidential guard was supposed to disarm but they refused, forcing the army to take over everywhere occupied by the presidential guard on Tuesday.
