Gov. Henry McMaster announced Wednesday that South Carolina will soon impose new restrictions on how low-income residents can use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, marking the latest state-level effort to reshape the federal program.

In a post on X, McMaster said he plans to issue an executive order directing the Department of Social Services (DSS) to impose “common-sense limits” on SNAP purchases.

America is getting healthy, and South Carolina will do her part. In the next few days, I will issue an executive order directing the Department of Social Services to place common-sense limits on purchases made using SNAP benefits, formerly known as “food stamps."
