This Fancy Hair tutorial will show you how to recreate this classic, Milkmaid braided hairstyle. The milkmaid braid is a timeless look that always comes back in style, and has been seen on the runway and on many A-list celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Sienna Miller and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, just to name a few!
You can create this style with regular 3-strand braids or Dutch / reverse braids, like I did. I find that the Dutch / reverse braid looks a little more interesting than the regular 3-strand braids, but this is totally up to you. If you wish to recreate this look with regular 3-strand braids, simply braid a regular 3-strand braid wherever I am braiding a reverse or Dutch braid.
There is very little difference between a regular 3-strand braid and a Dutch / reverse braid. To create a regular 3-strand braid, you have to cross each strand IN FRONT of one another as you braid. To create a Dutch or reverse braid (considered to be the same type of braid, just different name), you have to cross each strand BEHIND one another. With practice, a Dutch or reverse braid will be super easy to create and will add a little something special to your hairstyles! Although this hairstyle was created with Fancy Hair clip-in hair extensions, it looks great on natural hair too!
To recreate this hairstyle, you will need the following styling tools:
1. Finishing Serum or Spray
2. Hairbrush
3. 4 Clear Hair Elastics
4. Bobby Pins
5. Flat Iron or Curling Iron
Always remember to set your hot styling tools to a safe temperature of 360F! Human hair has a melting point of 450F, so to prevent your hair from heat damage and maintain it's healthy state, always set your hot styling tools below 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I like to set my hot styling tools to 360F to be safe, and I also find that this is the perfect temperature for achieving the looks that I want without damaging my hair. This suggestion is for both natural hair and hair extensions.
