The Queen's Gambit i(2020), based on Walter Tevis's 1983 novel of the same name, quickly became Netflix's most-watched scripted miniseries.

Created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, it begins in the mid-1950s and proceeding into the 1960s, the story follows the life of an orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) on her rise to the top of the chess world, while struggling with drug and alcohol dependency. The series has great cinematography and set and clothes designs, and - to quote director Scott Frank - "brings sexy back to chess".

From the start, director Scott Frank told composer Carlos Rafael Rivera Rivera the score should be piano-based. At first, Frank wanted it to be only piano, but as the first assemblies began to come in, we they realized they were going to need instrumental depth and color to fill the screen.
Rivera initially thought about writing one main theme for Taylor-Joy’s Beth but found that breaking it up into different themes that showed the complexity of her character — like Addiction, Genius, Mischief, Growth — worked better.
