The Bridge over the River Kwai, which took approximately sixteen months to build, cost the lives of over 6,000 British servicemen, as well as more than 6,000 other Allied prisoners of war, including Australians, Dutch, and Americans. In addition, an estimated 90,000 Asian civilian labourers from countries such as Thailand, Burma (now Myanmar), Malaya, and Indonesia also died during its construction.
In 1985, a group of former British prisoners of war returned to the site of the Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, to pay tribute and visit the graves of their fallen comrades.
