Some of today’s most mature actors served in World War II. Tony Bennett ended up disinterring mass graves in Europe, punishment for standing up for the rights of a friend and fellow soldier who was African American. Other Second World War veterans-turned-actors such as Harry Belafonte and Kirk Douglas took advantage of the benefit provided by the G.I Bill for returning soldiers to kick-start their acting careers, using it to invest in acting classes.

Many Hollywood stars who served in the military credit their service to giving them the wherewithal to make it in the cut-throat world of Hollywood. Colombian-American actress Zulay Henao, for example, enlisted in the Army right out of high school. She is the first to admit that her three years of training at Fort Bragg equipped her with the mental and physical fortitude she draws on to this day.

The Hollywood stars who served in the military in the Korean or Vietnam Wars used their training to inform their acting: taking up roles as police officers, army sergeants, or in shows and films discussing subjects related to confinement or combat. Tom Selleck got his break into TV with Magnum P.I, Morgan Freeman first starred in Shawshank Redemption (after a long stage career), and Adam Driver’s career really got going when he starred as Rylo Ken in Star Wars.
