I arrived in Jordan on May 25, 2024, with the intention of staying for 70 days, so I needed to extend my one-month tourist visa. Knowing that government offices wouldn't be open on the weekend (Friday and Saturday), I aimed to get my visa extension on Thursday. However, that Thursday was the last day of Eid, and many government employees had left early. I first went to my local police station, but the officer responsible for visa extensions had already gone home.
Determined to get my visa extension, I decided to go to the Abdali police station, which I had heard was a good place for such matters. Upon arrival, I handed over my passport and phone to security and received a card to retrieve my phone later. Despite not speaking Arabic, Al was with me to help communicate. At Abdali, I was told that I needed to start the process at my local police station. Given that it was already past 1:00 PM and the local station closed at 2:00 PM, we knew it wouldn't be possible to complete the process in time.
Feeling frustrated, I had to accept that my initial attempt to extend my visa had failed. I didn't want to risk overstaying and having a negative mark on my record, so I planned to try again on Sunday. On Sunday, we arrived early at the local police station and went through the security process again. This time, we successfully submitted the renewal of residency visa form and were directed to go to the Abdali police station for biometric screening.
At Abdali, we waited for my turn for biometrics. After some time, I was called in for fingerprinting and facial recognition scans. The equipment was somewhat outdated, requiring me to squat to align my eyes with the scanner. Once this was completed, I received the necessary stamps on my application and returned to my local police station to finalize the process.
Back at my local police station, I handed over the required documents, including copies of my passport and property deed (cushion). The officer processed my visa extension, charging me 40 JD for one month due to my Jordan Pass. Though I needed the extension only until August 2, my visa was extended until August 24, providing some extra leeway.
The entire process, including multiple visits to different police stations and navigating language barriers, took about two hours. It was crucial to stay patient and prepared, bringing essentials like photocopies and water. Despite the challenges, I successfully extended my visa and learned a lot about Jordan's bureaucratic processes.
I also gathered information on what would be required for a longer-term residency visa, should I return next year. This included various documents and approvals from different government departments. Overall, while the experience was stressful, having someone who spoke Arabic with me made it much more manageable.
