If you are sharpening a chisel and you are a home gamer, like myself, freehand is probably not the way to go. It is too easy to mess up your blade. I use a honing guide, some sandpaper, and a piece of kitchen granite (Don't Use The Countertop In Your Kitchen!) I've gotten great results with simple jigs, but a year and a half ago, I was given this guide that handles blades of many sizes.

The sandpaper technique takes blades to a mirror shine and you will be able to remove hair from the back of your hands. I wouldn't go for the face. Even with the guide, I'm still not that good yet.

The guide I use is a Veritas Mk II, and it makes things so easy, even a cave dweller like myself can do it.

The piece of granite is something I picked up at a Habitat Store from someone's kitchen renovation. It was the perfect size and about $10.00. Which is awesome. It would have also make a nice top for an end table. You just have to keep your eyes open.

The sandpaper is widely available at the big box home centers and auto parts stores.

Your initial prep and sharpening of a chisel, or any woodworking blade, can take a bit of time. Be patient and take your time.

The first step is to flatten the blade. Run the back side of the chisel flat over each grit of paper from coarsest to smoothest. You will spend the longest amount of time on the coarsest paper. The higher grits fine tune the flattening and then polish the back.

On the wet/dry papers, I use simple glass cleaner (probably under your sink) as a lubricant to hold the debris from the chisel and not clog the paper.

After the back is flat, it is time to work the primary bevel. This jig has several settings that make getting the angle easy. Again, the longest amount of time will be spent on the initial shaping of the bevel. One tip is to use pencil or a black marker to color the bevel. Make a few passes on the paper and the parts of the mark that are removed will show you where your blade has been in contact with the paper. This is especially helpful if you are setting a new angle. It will also give you an idea of how straight your honing technique is.

Work through all the grits, wiping the blade between papers. You do not want to contaminate the next higher grit paper. When you reach the end, you should have a nice polish on the chisel.

On the back of chisel, near the tip, you should feel a small burr. Run the flat side of the chisel on the higher grits to remove it and then it is time to put a micro bevel on your blade. With this jig, you can change a setting that will lift the angle a small amount. A couple of quick passes on the 3000 paper and you are done.

There is something awesome about sharpening a blade. Even if you need to use jigs and guides, it gives you a better understanding and brings you a little closer to your tools.
