For the fifth outing, Tales Along The Old Corpse Road must leave merry old England - and travel west, further west, and even further north into the Celtic lands. Technically we've had one Celtic tale already with The Wild Hunt in Cornwall, but now we hit the big three - Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

0:22 - The Song of Amergin: the least well-known of Old Corpse Road's repertoire was the one that required a sea voyage to get to - as well as relying on buses on the other side! This is why, instead of a long and exhilerating adventure across Ireland from the southwest corner to the east coast, you'll see eleven minutes of me sitting in a pub to tell the story, aided and abetted by a true hero of Irish folklore Don't worry, though, I did also find somewhere relevant to the story to show you - and it's not the famous Hill of Tara.
20:36 - Hag of the Mist: this legend can be found all over Wales, and gave me a slight problem - what to film, and where? Fortunately, searching for the Hag's Welsh name - Gwrach-y-Rhibyn - turned up some specific stories, and so I've chased the hideous crone to a couple of Welsh castles - the vast urban fortress that is Caerphilly Castle, and the ineptly-built, windswept Pennard Castle on the Gower peninsula. Two very different locations, but both provide some explanation as to how the legend of the Hag might have arisen. Apologies in advance for my rejectful attempts at the Welsh language to anyone living in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
43:00 - Isobel - Queen of Scottish Witches: the showcase piece for this episode, in which I track the life and (mis)deeds of Isobel Gowdie, the Highlands' most (in)famous witch. An essay by Fiona Tinker provides a convenient summary of the locations around Auldearn and Nairn I'd need to visit; Dr. Emma Wilby's weighty tome analysing Isobel's confessions in vast and bewildering detail provides all the background detail. Isobel's "published" (read: plundered from her confessions) poetry makes an appearance, as do some belligerent religious lunatics, an Iron Age hill fort, a primitive meat factory, some otherwise unremarkable stones and a bleak forest. Discover also what life was really like in the seventeenth-century Highlands (clue: it wasn't like Mel Gibson's Braveheart at all), and if you've ever wanted to know why witches are usually portrayed with a black cat and flying on a broomstick, then you might just get the answer here.
