At the last minute, Moscow betrayed and abandoned its main ally in South America, Venezuelan dictator Maduro. And this betrayal did not go unnoticed in Venezuela itself. Following the US operation, Venezuelan officials are openly disillusioned with Russia and call its partnership a sham.
According to Bloomberg , Venezuelan officials are extremely dissatisfied with Moscow's inability to protect President Nicolás Maduro. Behind the scenes in Caracas, the security partnership with Russia is being called a "paper tiger"—an alliance that has proven hollow. According to the agency, the Venezuelan side was counting on specific assistance, but never received it.
Bloomberg sources point to several critical failures by Moscow. Taken together, these have completely undermined trust in the "strategic partnership" with Moscow not only in Venezuela but also in Cuba. Russian and Cuban intelligence failed to identify the threat or warn of the impending US operation. The S-300 and Buk air defense systems supplied by Russia proved ineffective without full technical support, which Moscow never provided. Venezuela's cyber defense also depended on Russian assistance, but here too, Russia failed. Before Maduro's capture, the US, according to media reports, carried out cyberattacks that caused power outages in parts of Caracas.
According to Bloomberg, Maduro's successor, Delcy Rodriguez, has virtually no alternative. Venezuela is forced to consider the American offer of cooperation and weaken ties with Moscow and Havana. Russian officials, according to the agency's sources, were irritated by the US operation. However, the Kremlin made a cold calculation: relations with the US are now more important to Moscow than the fate of Caracas. Maduro's capture was described as "unpleasant" but "not catastrophic."
Bloomberg sources warn that the situation in Iran could pose a far more serious challenge for the Kremlin. Russia will likely formally issue statements of support, but, as with Venezuela, real assistance is unlikely. This confirms the overall trend. Politico previously wrote that Moscow's failure to protect Venezuela, Iran, and Cuba marked the "end of an era" for Putin's great-power project.
Recall, Russian propaganda has begun to justify the violent overthrow of the government in Venezuela. On the Rossiya 1 channel, hosts effectively justified Washington's operation and shifted responsibility for the failure of Russian air defenses to the Caracas authorities. On the "Vesti Nedeli" program, propagandist Dmitry Kiselev claimed that US actions do not undermine international law, but merely reflect a new world order. He claimed that US President Donald Trump is simply stating what the West has been doing for decades. Kiselev emphasized that Trump openly acknowledges the priority of force and national interests over international law, unlike European leaders, who, in his opinion, hide behind hypocritical rhetoric about democracy. The broadcast also addressed t
