Montevideo (full name: San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo) is the capital, principal port, and most populous city of Uruguay.

Located in the southern part of the country, it overlooks the northern bank of the Río de la Plata and is the southernmost capital of all America, precisely at 34°54'21.06" south latitude and 56°11'29.04" south latitude west longitude[5]. In fact, the nearby Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on the opposite bank of the Rio de la Plata, is located on a parallel located only 30 km further north than that of the Uruguayan capital. The city develops entirely on the right bank of the Santa Lucia river.

It is also the capital of the department of Montevideo, it has the smallest extension of the nineteen departments in which the country is primarily divided. Considering its metropolitan area, again in 2009, Montevideo had 1,973,380 inhabitants, corresponding to 58.8% of the national total population.[6]

In the area of ​​South America, the city of Montevideo occupies first place in the ranking of cities with a higher quality of life.[7] Montevideo is also the administrative headquarters of Mercosur and hosted the first soccer world championship in 1930.
