Donald Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine ‘within 24 hours’ but almost a year into his second term, the reality on the ground hasn’t changed.

Despite agreeing with Putin in Alaska in August that a comprehensive settlement must be reached for the fighting to stop, the US President has now U-turned, calling for a ceasefire without conditions - and using sanctions and missile threats to get it.

Russia has, in turn, continued to test nuclear-capable weapons in both air and sea, saying it would respond with overwhelming force if the US gave Kiev long-range Tomahawk missiles.

Backroom talks are still ongoing, despite stalling in public. Trump says he has solved ‘eight wars in eight years’ - will he ever be able to make that nine?
