Finally worked out what was wrong. It was the alternator. I have fitted a new ebay special for £170,and so far no noise and the battery is charging. In hindsight perhaps i should have put a multi metre on the alternator when i first had the problem. Probably could have saved my self some time and money, but at least its sorted. The idlers weren't exactly in top shape any way.
