Looking to socialize your puppy during COVID-19? Puppy trainer and dog psychology expert Ian Stone has some great tips to keep your puppy comfortable around people, all while maintaining a safe social distance.

Your puppy's first few months are critical for social development. You’ll want them to be comfortable around strangers, familiar with outdoor noises, and friendly with other dogs.

Here are a few quick tips to help you socialize your puppy during COVID-19.

1. Any socialization is better than none. Studies show that puppies who were exposed to people even in just a small way showed improvement in how they behave around others. Even if it’s at a distance, or just from the waist up.

2. Practice protected socialization. You can help your puppy socialize and get comfortable outside by taking your dog to a noisier, outdoor environment. Park your car, and let your puppy experience the sounds, sights, and smells of everyday life.

3. Use treats to reinforce positive behavior. Using a kind tone and some treats, reinforce the fact the loud outdoor noises are ok. Your puppy may get startled at construction, or loud traffic nearby, your reinforcement will show them that everything is fine.
