On 12 March 1945, Friedrich Fromm stood before a firing squad at Brandenburg-Görden Prison. Once one of the most powerful men in the German military, the Generaloberst who had commanded the entire Replacement Army now faced execution by the very regime he had served. His final words echoed across the prison courtyard: "I die, because it was ordered. I had always wanted only the best for Germany." The volley of shots ended his life. But for his family, this execution did not mark the end of their ordeal.
