SHAWCO Education is a University of Cape Town(UCT) run student organization with the focus being to help children learn.

SHAWCO Education has 11 student projects running in the four SHAWCO centres (Khayelitsha, Kensington, Manenberg and Nyanga). Volunteers are transported to the centres in SHAWCO buses; leaving from and returning to upper campus. Most projects usually run two three-hour sessions a week, but volunteers are only expected to attend one of these two sessions per week. A structured curriculum is also provided to volunteers, which simply and easily sets out the lesson for that particular day. A wide range of subjects are taught, but are mainly dependent on age-group. Junior projects (Grade 1-7) focus on literacy and numeracy whereas intermediate and senior projects(Grade 8-12) focus on English, Maths, Physical Science and Life Skills.

Volunteers are encouraged to engage with learners and fellow volunteers alike. It's a fun learning environment, but its also a great way to build solid friendships with other UCT students from different faculties.

More importantly though, it's an opportunity for learners in these communities to gain further understanding about particular subjects and become better students. Education has been recognized as a critical part of development of South Africa and SHAWCO Education really strives to improve the education standards of the children in the communities they work. With the focus being to helping children learn.

This particular video was produced for the recruitment time of 2012 and was played at the various faculty orientations to give new UCT students an understanding of what SHAWCO Education is all about.
