Toyota 1GD-FTV DPF Issues

The Hilux has been marketed as unbreakable, and Toyota’s generally have a reputation for being one of the most reliable vehicles available. This article will give you an overview of the fifth injector systems on current 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV engines, and how Toyota is trying to fix their ongoing DPF problems. There now seems to be a solution for impacted customers.

The designers of the new Toyota GD engines have chosen to introduce an injector upstream of the catalytic converter and DPF assembly which will spray diesel into the exhaust to regenerate the DPF. This seems like a good idea on paper, but they appear to be running into the same issues as other similar systems. Toyota calls this extra injector the “ Exhaust Fuel Addition Injector Assembly”, many technicians call it the “5th injector”.

At the time of uploading, Toyota has a Customer Service Exercise (CSE) underway for the DPF systems fitted to these engines. Toyota is actively contacting owners to have work done to update the software and to replace components in the system with updated parts in attempts to prevent this issue in the future. This is to be free of charge to customers of affected vehicles which seem to be from 2015 to 2018. From 2018, these engines have the updated parts already fitted and from 2020 they have been fitted with a redesign of the DPF system. Toyota is also offering a 10 year ‘no limitation on kilometres’ warranty on the DPF systems on these impacted vehicles.
