About the talk:
For Indigenous women, childbirth has been a site of ongoing colonization. Miranda Kelly, Director of Indigenous Women & Family Health for Vancouver Coastal Health – Aboriginal Health shares her reflections and lessons learned from her experiences as a mother and doula. She talks about approaches to decolonizing birth, how to make space for Indigenous birth workers, and ways to support birth as a site of Indigenous resurgence and intergenerational healing.

About the speaker:
Miranda Kelly (Tilyen) (she/her) is of Stό:lō and mixed settler ancestry. She was raised in her home community, Soowahlie First Nation (near Chilliwack, BC) and has kinship ties to Cowichan, Snuneymuxw, and Sumas First Nations. Ms. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from the University of Victoria, and a Master of Public Health from the University of British Columbia. Since 2007, she has held positions in Indigenous health research, planning, policy, education, engagement, and community care. Passionate about Indigenous Peoples reclaiming authority as decision-makers in their own health and well-being, Ms. Kelly strives to create a better world through principles of Indigenous wellness and decolonizing approaches. After the birth of her second child, she was called to birth work, serving as a full spectrum doula with the Ekw’i7tl Indigenous doula collective. She also helped co-create and facilitate Indigenous doula training and prenatal curriculum targeted toward Indigenous families. In February, 2021, she joined Vancouver Coastal Health as the Director, Indigenous Women & Family Health.
